How Much Could Your Child’s Education Cost in the Future?
A college fee you can manage today may look very different by the time your child is ready to enrol. Start by estimating the goal and making your assumptions visible.
Start with today's cost
Choose a realistic current cost for the course or education path you have in mind. Include tuition and, where relevant, accommodation, travel, books, equipment and other fees. Use published fee schedules when available; otherwise label your number as an estimate.
Allow for rising costs
Apply an assumed annual increase to today's cost for each year until enrolment.
Estimated future cost = today's estimated cost × (1 + annual cost increase)years remaining
For example, if an education goal costs ₹20 lakh today and you assume an 8% annual increase for 12 years, the illustrative future amount is about ₹50.4 lakh. This is a scenario, not a prediction.
Look at the funding gap
Compare the estimated future cost with the amount already set aside and the contributions you may be able to make. Investment growth is uncertain, so test more than one return assumption rather than relying on a single number.
Review the estimate regularly
- Update the target course and current fees when you learn more.
- Revisit the number of years remaining.
- Review existing savings and contributions.
- Test different cost-increase assumptions.
